Kolkata Launches Peace Institute Amid Global Conflict Concerns

Kolkata witnessed the inauguration of its first independent Institute of Peace Studies, TIPS. Founder Chairman Sitaram Sharma said the institute will focus on peace and conflict resolution studies. It will offer Certificate and Diploma courses for students from Classes 10 to 12. Sharma said peace is not merely the absence of war, but a subject that needs deeper study. Speaking at the global conference, he highlighted India-Pakistan tensions and conflicts across the world. Citing the Global Peace Index, he said 92 countries are involved in conflicts beyond their borders. He added that nearly 162,000 people died due to wars and conflicts last year, with Ukraine and Gaza accounting for a major share. Former Foreign Secretary Krishnan Srinivasan highlighted Mahatma Gandhi’s message of non-violence, while Major General Arun Roy said no one truly wins in war. The programme was moderated by Dr. Rahul Verma and attended by several distinguished guests from Kolkata.

Tagore Institute of Peace Studies Launched in Kolkata

The Tagore Institute of Peace Studies was launched at Bharat Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata. The institute will focus on academic research, dialogue, and policy engagement in peace and conflict resolution. Speakers stressed the need to develop peace as an organised field of study. A special session on education discussed its role in building entrepreneurship, ethics, innovation, and inclusivity. The discussion also highlighted the need to create responsible citizens for long-term social development. The launch marked a commitment to peace, purpose, progress, and inclusive development. Distinguished guests included Naresh Pachisia, Ambassador Anil Wadhwa, Anil Swarup, Sitaram Sharma, and Dr. N.G. Khaitan. Dr. N.G. Khaitan, Anil Swarup, Sitaram Sharma, Anil Wadhwa, and Naresh Pachisia were present at the launch event. All speakers emphasised the importance of education and dialogue in building a peaceful society.

TIPS Lecture Examines Indus Treaty and Water Conflicts

The first Tagore Institute of Peace Studies Lecture Series focused on the Indus Waters Treaty. Dr. Uttam Kumar Sinha, author of Trial By Water: Indus Basin, delivered the lecture. He said the treaty needs to be examined in the context of changing times. Dr. Sinha explained the historical background of the Interim Treaty after Partition and the 1960 treaty. He said the Indus River System was vital for farmlands in both India and Pakistan. Nehru hoped the treaty would help create peace between the two countries. Dr. Sinha noted that the treaty also showed how rivals can cooperate over shared natural resources. Following the Pahalgam terror attack, India suspended the treaty in April 2025. TIPS Founder Chairman Sitaram Sharma said many future conflicts may revolve around water.

Peace Education Is the Need of the Hour: Biman Banerjee

At a grand award ceremony organised by the United Nations Association of West Bengal, Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee honoured several individuals and organisations for their humanitarian work. Amrita Dasgupta of Swayam, Ruprekha Singh Roy of Lotus Rescue, and Kallol Ghosh of Samaj Unnayan Kendra received the Humanity Award 2025 for their contributions. Banerjee described peace education as the need of the hour and assured his full support to the Tagore Institute of Peace Studies. WEBFUNA President Sitaram Sharma announced the formation of TIPS, an institute dedicated to peace and conflict resolution studies. He also highlighted India’s social challenges, including poverty, unemployment, malnutrition, inequality, and lack of basic resources. Russian Consul General Maxim Kozlov reaffirmed Russia’s support for India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council. Other speakers, including Surajit Kar Purkayastha, Dr. Vikram Sarkar, and J.P. Acharya, stressed the importance of peace education in preventing violence and promoting non-violent conflict resolution.

The Mironda Group Picnic 2025

A day-out picnic had been organized for the employees of Mironda Group of Company on December 13th, 2025, at Ritabani Resort, Ghatakpukur, Shibpur. It was a beautiful location with full of greenery and attractive scenery. Everyone gathered at the office premises in the morning and they left for the destination by an AC Bus. After having their breakfast, they settled down and relaxed for some time. Thereafter, different games and activities were scheduled there in two rounds, before and after lunch, like Cricket, Musical Chair, Spoon-Marble and Housie. Fishing and village tour was also available for the participants. Everyone enjoyed it a lot. After Hi-Tea in the evening, we returned back.

Indo-Pacific Conference Highlights India’s Growing Strategic Regional Role

The Tagore Institute of Peace Studies, in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, organised an international conference on the Indo-Pacific in Kolkata. The day-long seminar brought together diplomats, policymakers, academics, students, and strategic affairs experts. Ambassador Anil Wadhwa said the Indo-Pacific has become central to India’s security, economic growth, and global role. He noted that the region reflects strong trade activity, strategic rivalry, and shifting political influence. Speakers discussed India’s move from Look East to Act East as a more assertive regional approach. The seminar also highlighted the need for open, secure sea routes and stronger diplomatic cooperation. Experts spoke on trade, technology, changing demographics, and the ambitions of major powers in the region. India was seen as a stabilising force for peace, balance, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. TIPS Chairman Sitaram Sharma said the conference marked Kolkata’s growing importance as a centre for strategic dialogue.

TIPS Dialogue Highlights Women, Journalism and Peace Education

The Tagore Institute of Peace Studies organised a dialogue titled “Voices of Change: Women Shaping Society.” The event brought together women journalists from Kolkata and members of the Women Press Corps. Speakers shared personal experiences, career challenges, and memorable stories from the field of journalism. Four distinguished women journalists were honoured for their contribution to public discourse. The discussions covered issues such as illegal sex determination, Taliban rule, human trafficking, and women’s time poverty. TIPS Founder Chairman Sitaram Sharma highlighted the progress of women in journalism since the 1940s. The programme also reflected the institute’s larger mission of promoting peace, dialogue, and understanding. TIPS seeks to make peace an active pursuit through research, education, and conflict resolution programmes. The initiative underlined that peace, equality, and social responsibility must be taught and nurtured across generations.

Annual Day Celebration of The Mironda Group of Companies

The Mironda Group Annual Day celebration has been held in Mironda office premises on 2nd of May 2026. It started with the felicitation of the Guests – Chairman of the company Mr. Sitaram Sharma, Managing Director of the company Mr. Amit Sharma and Senior Advisor of the company Mr. Subrata Paul. Mr. Sitaram Sharma has started the program with his opening remarks, where he explained the vision of the company. He told about the various new segments which we are moving into. Mr. Amit Sharma addressed the audience with his future vision for the company. Thereafter, he announced the winners in different award segments. For the year 2025-26, awards given to the Employee of the Year, Supporting Staff of the Year and Employee of the Quarter Jan’26 to Mar’26. Apart from this, award for the “Long Association of 15 Years” has also been given to two employees of the company. After having a Question-Answer Session with the employees, it concluded with the closing remarks by the Chairman Mr. Sitaram Sharma. Vote of Thanks has been given by the Senior Advisor Mr. Subrata Paul.

Bengal’s Export-Based Income Could Double by 2030: Shashi Panja

West Bengal Industry Minister Shashi Panja inaugurated the 38th and 39th Export Awards ceremony of EEPC. She said the state’s exports reached USD 3,134 million in 2023-24. This is nearly three percent of India’s total engineering exports. She also noted that Bengal’s GSDP has grown to Rs. 17 lakh crore. Mirenda Minmetals CMD Sitaram Sharma said Bengal’s export income has reached nearly Rs. 1 lakh crore. Dr. Panja honoured Sharma with a Silver Trophy for being among the best exporters for 2020-21.

Annual Export Awards Ceremony

Miranda Minmetals Limited Chairman Sitaram Sharma and Managing Director Amit Sharma received an award and certificate of honour from British Deputy High Commissioner Andrew Fleming at the 40th and 41st Annual Export Awards ceremony of the Engineering Export Promotion Council. EEPC National Vice President Akash Shah was also present. Miranda has been receiving awards for several years for its outstanding exports in ferroalloys and has also been recognised as a Star Export House.
